How to setup a DNS proxy or VPN to access US content

If you want to access US content that is geo-restricted (like HBO Now, Hulu, etc) in Australia then you will need to use a DNS proxy or VPN service.

You will be able to watch Netflix content that is otherwise only available in the United States as well!

Our recommendation is a service called Smart DNS Proxy. They offer a free 14-day trial, so if things aren't working out just cancel before this time period lapses.

This service is slightly easier to setup than other VPN services (though they give you free VPN access as well!) and works on any device you can think of. We've tested on Smart TVs, iOS devices, Apple TVs, Playstation, Xbox, pretty much anything out there will support this technique.

They also have servers in Australia, which means you'll get a much faster service than using an international VPN service. In our experience with this service you won't run into buffering or speed issues at all!

  1. Sign up for a new account with Smart DNS Proxy
  2. Login and click 'Activate' next to the IP Activation section
  3. Follow their easy device specific guides
  4. Done! You should now be able to access US-only content and use apps like HBO Now, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video and see the US specific content that was previously locked away!

If you would prefer to go the VPN route:

  1. Sign up for a new account with Smart DNS Proxy
  2. Login and click on the 'VPN' tab
  3. Enable the service and choose a username
  4. Download the VPN app for your device of choice
  5. Done!
